The Fraud Investigator role is responsible for enterprise-level fraud risk management analysis (detection, identification, prevention and resolution) and investigations related to fraudulent activities. This includes the review of new and existing accounts, unusual client/banker transactions, analysis and investigations of check and deposit fraud, debit card fraud, online fraud and identified loan related documentation. Position scope includes internal and external-facing fraud-related activities. Significant liaison role with business partners across Bank and its subsidiaries, law enforcement agencies and industry associations.

  • Under the direction of the Senior Manager of Fraud Investigations, the Fraud Investigator will investigate all related fraud cases referred by business partners and outside parties.
  • Make sound subjective decisions to identify any accounts demonstrating high-risk behavior which should be considered for closure, heightened monitoring, or similar actions.
  • Identify risk(s) & prevent loss(es) related to fraud activities/high-risk behaviors and suggest prevention solutions.
  • Maintain detailed records of all cases/investigations and update case management toolset(s) as appropriate.
  • Conduct initial and follow-up interviews with customers, victims, financial institutions and merchants so as to compile accurate and pertinent data for each investigation.
  • Act as a liaison with law enforcement (federal, state & local levels) and social services agencies to pursue relevant investigation information and pursue prosecution/restitution as appropriate.
  • A complete variety of fraud related tasks and/or special projects assigned by the Deputy Corporate Security & Investigations.
  • Compile an "Incident Case Review" to identify and implement "Lessons Learned" for each fraud case as appropriate.
  • Understand and comply with regulations such as Reg E, Elderly Abuse, FACT Act, SAR, etc.
  • In addition to business units, the investigator should partner closely with Internal Audit, BSA/AML, Legal and other corporate functions to advance departmental and business goals.
  • Perform duties & responsibilities specific to department functions & activities.
  • Performs other duties & responsibilities as required or assigned by supervisor.
  • Responsibilities include the following: 1) adhering to and complying with the applicable, federal and state laws, regulations and guidance, including those related to Anti-money laundering (i.e. Bank Secrecy Act, US PATRIOT Act, etc.) 2) adhering to Bank policies and procedures, 3) completing required training, 4) identifying and reporting suspicious activity to the AML Officer, and 5) knowing and verifying the identity of any customer(s) that enters into a relationship with the Bank. 

Skills, Knowledge, And Abilities

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of related work experience in fraud analysis, investigations required
  • Minimum of 2 years of demonstrated investigations work with a preference for combined internal & external experience
  • Experienced in making quick, high-quality decisions on complex issues
  • Focus on problem-solving skills and ingenuity is required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and prioritizing skills
  • Ability to handle a variety of projects simultaneously
  • Ability to handle confidential information in a mature and professional manner
  • Ability to effectively communicate with customers and business partners to resolve any issues of risk or fraud
  • Ability to work with concepts and work independently
  • Ability to be adaptable and flexible while responding to deadlines on assignments and workflow fluctuations
  • Ability to prepare cases and work constructively with law enforcement in pursuit of detailed investigations, prosecution and restitution
  • Skilled in conducting interviews in order to obtain information, suspects, and related third parties during the course of an investigation
  • Familiarity with credit bureau reports and related informational sources from the fraud and security domain
  • In addition to the foregoing skills, knowledge and abilities, solid knowledge of core banking systems and diverse banking products (and their associated fraud typologies) is highly preferred.
  • Preference for at least a Bachelor's Degree-level education with a relevant concentration in finance or criminal justice.  

Mental/Physical Requirements

  • The ability to learn and comprehend basic instructions; understand the meanings of words and respond effectively; and perform basic arithmetic accurately and quickly.
  • Vision must be sufficient to read data reports, manuals and computer screens.
  • Hearing must be sufficient to understand a conversation at a normal volume, including telephone calls and in person.
  • Speech must be coherent to clearly convey or exchange information, including the giving and receiving of assignments and/or directions.
  • Position involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.
  • Must be able to travel in a limited capacity.
